Weekly Sports Roundup

Kevin's corner

August 7th 2022

It’s been quite a week in the worlds vast array of sports, both on and off the field. There has been both tragedy and triumphs for many players and fans here in the United States and around the world.

Sadly, this past week we lost two legends of the sporting world, Bill Russell and Vin Sculley. They were both bigger than life in their respective arenas.

Bill Russell was an icon of the golden age of basketball. His tenue with the Boston Celtics changed the way the game is played. He was a very visible advocate for human and civil rights in era during which advocacy was not a popular vocation. I would encourage everyone to read his story.

Vin Sculley began his career in sports broadcasting in 1950, calling baseball games first in Boston and then in New York for The Brooklyn Dodgers. When The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles he moved with them, calling Dodger baseball games for decades and becoming quite literally the voice of Dodger Baseball as well as The World Series and several other major sporting events around the country. They will both be missed, may they Rest In Peace.

In case you hadn’t noticed, this was a very big week for woman’s sports. England’s Lionesses, The English National Woman’s Soccer Team, became champions of the EURO2022 The European Football (soccer) Championship after defeating Germany 2-1 in a finals thriller that was played in front of a sellout crowd of 89,000 yes 89,000 not to mention that at London’s Whembly Stadium it was watched not only live by those that who were in the stadium but also by millions on television around the globe. So, for the Brits lets now see if The English National Men’s Team could perform as well in The World Cup this fall, that would be quite something to talk about as I don’t think that’s ever been accomplished.

Moving on to the bitter sweet exposure that the WNBA has been getting due to the sad news that’s been coming out of Russia involving the Britney Griner saga, her unfortunate story has now played out, and in prime time. This exposure has reflected in some worldwide attention for the league, though recognition well deserved the catalyst for it has been disturbing. I am no fortune teller but with the league’s playoffs just around the corner, I can see better exposure coming due for some new found emerging stars as they gain more recognition for the talented athletes they are. I can see them one day soon elevating to the heights of exposure that their male counterparts receive, it can and will happen.

BARN BURNER ALERT: The USA Woman’s National Team plays The England National Women’s Team in November at Whembly in London. Look for that one to be sold out as well. My Prediction USA 3 England 0

Major League Baseball had one heck of a week. The San Diego Padres added a regiment of fire power to their line up by trading for Juan Soto, Brandon Drury and Justin Bell. I mean seriously, this move makes them an instant contender in The West and a rival series against The LA Dodgers this weekend should show us how they can fare. To echo many a sportscaster this week “these are not your Grandpa’s Padres”.

Have no fear Red Sox and Yankees fans, we’ll get to you in the weeks to come.

As I discussed last week, we are now entering into what should be an exciting season of college and professional football. OK, it’s not just gonna be exciting, it’s gonna be friggin awesome and I’m literally hyperventilating just thinking about it. Yes, I watched the Hall of Fame Game. Yes, I hosted a small gathering of friends, a sort of “Pre-Season Prep” party to see who will be in and who will be out this year, and yes, I placed a small friendly wager just to test the waters. And yes, I won, and yes I have to gloat a little, as it doesn’t always work out that way, LOL.FYI I tend to be a happy go lucky guy, but lately more so, as these past few days I find that there is now a football game of interest back on air, either professional or college, so for every single week from now until the Super Bowl my main sporting passion is back, it has boosted my post Covid state of mind. Catch up soon and have a lucky week.
